Medical Record Confidentiality

The confidentiality of acupuncture patients’ medical records is governed by the Code of Ethics of the Ordre des acupuncteurs du Québec (OAQ) and its regulations, which require acupuncturists to retain these records for at least five years, ensure their physical and electronic security, and not disclose them without consent. Patients may request access to, correction of, or destruction of their information, and are protected against unauthorized disclosures.

The confidentiality of consent forms is crucial for medical records, as they protect patients’ personal information, which may only be disclosed with their explicit authorization or that of a legal representative, except in cases provided for by law (for example, imminent danger). Consent must be freely given and informed, and may be withdrawn at any time by the patient. The consent form must be written clearly and presented separately from other information.
