Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy, known as ba guan in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a complementary technique to acupuncture that uses cups applied to the skin to create suction. This suction can be produced either by heating the air inside the cup or by using a mechanical pump. Its primary effect is to mobilize Blood, stimulate the circulation of Qi and Blood, release muscular tension, and help eliminate stagnation and energetic blockages.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is particularly indicated for Qi and Blood stagnation, muscular and joint pain, stiffness of the back and neck, respiratory conditions such as bronchitis or pulmonary congestion, and certain digestive disorders associated with stagnation. Depending on the method of application, duration, and placement of the cups, cupping may have either a tonifying or dispersing effect.

From a physiological perspective, suction creates local hyperemia, increasing blood flow, improving tissue oxygenation, and promoting the release of endorphins and natural anti-inflammatory mediators. Scientific studies suggest that cupping may reduce chronic pain, decrease muscular tension, and improve joint mobility, while also modulating inflammatory responses and the autonomic nervous system.

In acupuncture treatment, cupping is often used in combination with needles to enhance the movement of Qi, promote drainage of stagnation, warm the meridians, and relieve local pain. Its effectiveness depends on precise selection of treatment areas or acupuncture points, the type of cups used, as well as the duration and frequency of sessions.
